Back in January I was struggling to find sponsors for Sandringham 2019 when I heard BBC Gardeners' World Live were inviting entries into the Beautiful Borders category.
As this year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Gurkha Welfare Trust I particularly wanted to create another show garden for them, and felt I might stand more chance of securing sponsors at a larger show.
Fast forward to March, and I was delighted when Greene King, Thompson & Morgan and BHGS all generously agreed to support this year's GWT garden.
Preparing the submission took an entire week; thinking about the design of the border (6m x 1.5m) choosing beautiful Himalayan plants and working on the presentation was the perfect antidote to a miserable January. The sketch below shows the design, with a shady area at one end under a Betula utilis Jacquemontii, and vibrant planting further along including Delphinium, Primula, Salvia and Persicaria. Structure is given by Rhododendron and Leycesteria.
Thompson & Morgan have kindly donated two beautiful Rhododendron - now all I have to do is hold them back until June!
T&M also generously gave me some Meconopsis 'Lingholm' - the stunning Himalayan blue poppy. At the moment they're looking rather sorry for themselves in my greenhouse and sadly may not be coming with me to the show.
BBC Gardeners' World Live attracts over 100,000 visitors and I hope this border will showcase the stunning plants of the Himalayas and more importantly raise awareness of the life changing work of the Gurkha Welfare Trust in Nepal.
BBC Gardeners' World Live, NEC Birmingham, 13-16 June 2019.
